An open project by Sagara Bootmaker for Indonesian leather craftsmen
As a part of our latest collaboration with Maryam Tannery Italy few months ago, we have a limited amount of Vachetta Oil Horsebutt in Burgundy, and we wanted to see what Indonesian leather craftsmen could make with it.
So we decided to put the leather In Good Hands. We’re inviting independent. leather craftsmen and emerging leather brands in Indonesia to submit a design using this leather.
This is not a competition.
There is no winner.
We simply want to see how different craftsmen interpret the same material through their own design, construction, and way of making.
——————————————
WHO CAN JOIN
This project is open to:
* Independent leather craftsmen
* Small and emerging leather brands (max 50k IG followers)
* Based in Indonesia
* Actively making their own products
* With a genuine interest in handcraft and leatherwork
We will prioritize makers who have their own approach to craftmanship and are actively involved in the making process.

THE MATERIAL
Selected makers will receive Vachettal Oil Horsebutt Burgundy from Maryam Tannery, Italy, provided by Sagara at no cost.
Each maker will receive an allocation based on their proposed design and the available leather stock.
Because the leather is limited, we will review each proposal individually.
——————————————
THE DESIGN
We want to see what you would make with this leather.
Your submission should include:
* Product concept
* Sketch, drawing, or reference
* Estimated leather requirement
* Brief explanation of the design
The product should be small to medium leather goods, it does not have to be footwear.
We are interested in seeing different interpretations of the same material.
——————————————
THE CRAFT
The finished product should demonstrate genuine craftsmanship.
Saddle stitching is required as part of the construction.
This is not about making the most complicated product.
It is about making something well.

Submission closes
Submit your design and proposal by this date.
08 OCTOBER 2026

We will announce the selected craftsmen and projects.
15 OCTOBER 2026
Material Day at Sagara
Selected makers will be invited to our workshop to meet the Sagara team, discuss their projects, and select and cut their Vachetta Oil Horsebutt Burgundy together with us.
This is where the making begins.
For those who are unable to make it to the workshop, simply let us know your leather requirements. Our team will select and cut the leather according to your needs, then arrange the shipment to you.
We’d love to have everyone with us, but we understand that not everyone can make the trip. The project should remain accessible regardless of where you are in Indonesia.
12 DECEMBER 2026
In Good Hands Gathering
We hope all selected makers will have their projects completed by this date.
We’ll invite all participating craftsmen back to the Sagara workshop for a special gathering together with House of Sagara, our VVIP community of Sagara owners.
It will be a day to meet, share, and talk about making.
There will be opportunities to:
* Share experiences and knowledge about production and leather
* Exchange ideas with fellow craftsmen
* Meet and network with members of House of Sagara
* Spend time together at the Sagara workshop
* Receive a special metal plaque from Sagara as a small token of appreciation for your dedication to keeping craftsmanship alive in Indonesia
This isn’t about who made the best product.
It’s about what happens when good material is put in good hands.
We provide the material.
